Your Questions About Ministry, Answered with Grace
From choosing where to serve to discovering your gifts, this section is here to help you find your place in God’s work.
What is a "ministry"?
A ministry is a way of serving others, inspired by the example of Jesus. In the church context, it refers to an organized effort to meet the needs of specific groups of people, based on the unique gifts and talents God has given each person.
As the Seventh-day Adventist Church Manual puts it, a ministry is “calling men and women into positions of sacred responsibility.”
In simpler terms, it’s an avenue to serve the Lord by serving others. Jesus described this in Matthew 25:40: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
What do you do in a ministry?
Each ministry has a specific focus and activities depending on the group it serves.
For example, the Deaf Ministry (under Adventist Possibility Ministries) involves learning sign language, interpreting songs and sermons, and building friendships with the Deaf community.
Other ministries may focus on children, families, media, health, community service, or music. You choose a ministry based on where your interests, skills, and passion for service align.
Why join a ministry?
Joining a ministry is a meaningful way to use your talents and time to help others.
Jesus served with compassion, and ministry invites us to follow His example—not for personal gain, but to share His love.
Whether you’re tech-savvy, musically inclined, or simply love connecting with people, there’s a place for you to make a difference.
How can I join a ministry?
There are a few ways to get involved, depending on the ministry’s role and responsibilities:
- Volunteering – Many ministries welcome those who step forward to serve.
- Nominated – Some roles, like Deacons or Deaconesses, are selected by a church nominating committee.
- Invited by ministry members – Sometimes, current members invite others to join based on shared interests or observed gifts.
- Automatic membership – Families are naturally part of the Family Ministry, and children or youth are included in age-based ministries.
If you’re unsure where to start, talk to one of our leaders. We’ll be glad to help!
Am I required to join a ministry?
No, joining a ministry is not required.
However, ministries are open to everyone, and you’re welcome to participate at your own pace. In age-based ministries like Children’s or Youth Ministries, being part of the group often means you’re already included!
Can I join even if I’m not baptized?
Yes! You don’t need to be baptized to begin serving in many ministries.
Ministry can be part of your spiritual journey, helping you grow in faith, learn more about Jesus, and experience the joy of serving others.
How do I know which ministry is right for me?
Here are a few suggestions:
- Pray – Ask God to lead you and show you how you can serve.
- Talk to someone – Our pastors and leaders are here to help you discover your gifts and where they can be used.
- Reflect on your interests and availability – Consider your schedule, skills, and what energizes you.
- Start small – You don’t have to commit right away. Sometimes the ministry finds you through the people and needs around you.
Not all ministry happens inside the church—your calling might involve outreach in your school, workplace, or community.
